Capoeira masters from around the world gathered at the academy to give a demonstartion of thier unique skills in this martial art, There was a great atmosphere with music and dance, children and staff performed with the group in partners trying to out perform each other.

Capoeira is a Brazilian dance-martial art and the second national sport of Brazil. Capoeira originated among the African slaves in Brazil in the sixteenth century, as a form of self-defence. Disguised as a dance to escape their masters' prohibition, Capoeira developed through centuries a complex art incorporating music and movement. The deadly potential of Capoeira was hidden from the slave-masters by its dance-like elegance, baffling acrobatics, and the engaging rhythms of its music.
Capoeira has evolved into a spectacular artform incorporating music, movement, acrobatics and game-play. Over the past 30 years Capoeira has experienced a meteoric rise to international popularity from its origins as a marginalised and illegal Afro Brazilian cultural past time. Capoeira movement has a broad influence on Contemporary Dance, Street/Break Dance and the sport of choreographed martial arts called “Tricking”. Capoeira Conviver aims to provide Capoeira tuition in keeping with the traditons of and to facilitate access to the contemporary artforms which it has, and continues to influence.
Capoeira Conviver is a community group dedicated to the teaching, performing and training of Capoeira and the Afro-Brazilian Arts. Every year Capoeira Conviver holds an annual festival which attracts artists and performers from Brazil and across Europe. Members of the PE staff at The Oldham Academy North have shown a keen interest in Capoeira and in appreciation and support of the ongoing efforts Capoeira Conviver will be visiting the academy to help promote the academy’s capoeira work.
The Capoeira Conviver group will host a five day programme of masterclasses, open workshops and performances culminating in the creation of a vibrant live theatre event showcasing Afro-Brazilian Arts. The objective of the project is to build on the success of the Conviver 2008 and 2010 Batizado Festivals by creating a bigger, better, more accessible and broader Capoeira based event.
This year the event is being delivered during Black History Month, using the Capoeira to communicate the historical and sociocultural relevance of the arts.
