Personal Enrichment Period

“Since I came to the academy, I’ve learnt so many new things, made new friends and visited new places. There’s a great atmosphere that means you can learn but in a fun way.”

The Oldham Academy North opened in September 2010 with a strong focus on English, Mathematics and Science. However it is equally proud of its broad and balanced curriculum and the wide variety of sports, arts and enrichment opportunities it offers to all students. The rationale behind this is to enable all students to excel, succeed and to motivate them to be the best they can.

At the heart of this innovative and varied curriculum is the Personal Enrichment Period. This offers all students the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities that are not traditionally offered in the school curriculum. Activities are varied and students can sample a range throughout the school year. Furthermore, students choose what activities they wish to participate in.

So what activities are available? The choice is wide and continually expanding; from sporting activities, to the creative, or sessions which enable students to consider their career options. Students can therefore select from choices such as: archery, horse riding, kick boxing, photography or even visit local colleges for taster sessions of subjects they may wish to pursue after they have completed their education at the Academy.

The aims of the Personal Enrichment Period are quite simple: to develop students’ wider skills in preparation for modern day life; to challenge students and give them new opportunities; to raise their self-esteem and aspirations and to support areas of the curriculum. By providing our students with these experiences we believe our students will be high achievers, excellent role models and active citizens.
