Successful economies are underpinned by a strong supply of people with a range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) qualifications, working across a range of spheres. A STEM literate population is crucial.
STEMNET works with a range of partner organisations, including government, industry, professional institutions, education and other major companies, to ensure that the UK has both of these.
The Office of Science and Innovation (OSI) within the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) seeks to engage under represented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) as one of its key priorities. STEM Access Grants provide an opportunity for schools to access funding to engage in STEM activity those Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) pupils which research indicates are under-represented in STEM, specifically those of Caribbean, Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin.
Pupils from year 8 are chosen to take part in a borough wide science challenge day held at the Oldham Sixth Form College this summer term. Pupils took part in activities related to Robotics and Engineering, with the assistance of students from the University of Liverpool.
Year 10 pupils are taken to Alton Towers as part of the physics units in the GCSE courses. Pupils will take part in demonstrations and interactive activities designed and developed by the ‘Mad Science’ team, related to forces and their effects.
