Geography at GCSE

geography

Specification: GCSE Geography for WJEC Specification B

A rapidly growing subject area at the Academy. This is an exciting and motivating course designed to help students develop the abilities required to achieve exam success.

An ever more important subject with the arrival of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).

Specification: WJEC Specification B.

An issues-based, investigative approach to geography based around three themes:

1. Challenges of living in a built environment;
2. People and the natural world interactions;
3. People, work and development.

Each theme develops students knowledge and skills in these areas of study:

  • Place: The physical and human characteristics of specific places.
  • Space: Where places and landscapes are located and how they change. What are the interactions between places?
  • Scale: Developing knowledge and understanding at a range of scales from local to national to international to global.
  • Interdependence: The development of an appreciation of how countries are connected in social, economic, environmental and political ways.
  • Environmental interaction: Are people changing the environment? Is sustainable development important in our future?
  • Physical and human processes: How do people change places, landscapes and societies?
  • Cultural understanding and diversity: What are the differences and similarities between people, places, environments and cultures? How do people’s values and attitudes differ across the globe? How might this influence social, environmental, economic and political change?
